Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how you work.

Trimble robotic and scanning total stations can be fully operated by one person and feature the highest in accuracy, range, tracking and performance options.

Trimble mechanical and Autolock® total stations are ideal for two- or three-person crews with one or two people operating the total station and another person using the rod to locate or stakeout points.

The Trimble SX12 features 1″; angular accuracy, a Trimble VISION camera system, and the ability to scan 26,600 points per second up to 600 meters away, with a clean point cloud where range noise is just 1.5 mm at 200 m range.

The SX12 is available with or without the laser pointer; it can be added as an upgrade after initial purchase.

Regionally, the SX12 is available in two different radio models. Please contact your local distributor to learn more.

Trimble S series total stations (S5, S7, S9 and S9 HP) are available in two versions:

Trimble robotic total stations can be fully operated by one person using a radio link to the controller and feature the highest in accuracy, range, tracking and performance options.

Trimble Autolock®, total stations can also be operated by one person for certain tasks, but are ideal for two- or three-person crews with one person operating the total station and another person using the rod to locate or stake out points.

S series models (S5, S7, S9, S9 HP) can be ordered with a range of options including: Autolock® or robotic, angular accuracy (0.5″, 1″, 2″, 3″, or 5″), Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) technology and an integrated Trimble VISION camera system.

Some options are only available on certain models, for example, 0.5″ angular accuracy is available only for the S9 and S9 HP models.

Review the compare tables below to see all of the options available for each model.

C series models (C3, C5, C5 HP) come standard with Trimble Autofocus technology and two onboard controllers. You can choose the angular accuracy (1″, 2″, 3″, or 5″) and Plummet type (Laser or Optical).

Trimble C3 is available with intuitive onboard software and alphanumeric keys, whereas the Trimble C5 and C5 HP are available with color touchscreen displays running Trimble Access software.

Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) technology in the Trimble C3 and C5 have longer range, whereas the EDM technology in the C5 HP is more accurate.

Trimble total stations are built to last and require fewer preventative maintenance check-ups than other similar products. The recommended preventative maintenance interval for Trimble C series is every year and for Trimble SX12 and S series total stations every two years.
